The Meeting Rebooted
Last year we had to postpone the meeting of the Swedish Archaeological Society due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Now we will make a new attempt and are proud to say that all speakers invited last time are able to attend this year too.
Archaeologists without Borders?
The theme “Archaeologists without Borders?” has definitely not become less important during the year that has passed. Political voices demanding sharper laws on migration, assimilation and the construction of a culturally homogeneous society are getting stronger in Sweden as well as in many other countries. References to heritage are often used to legitimate these political agendas.
Archaeology as we know it was born in the heyday of nineteenth century nationalism and has by tradition been nationally defined, whether as contract archaeology, archaeological research projects, or museum-based. But borders that used to be taken for granted are now contested, both politically and academically. National contexts are challenged by concepts such as Europe, the Global, and the Local.
The 9th Biannual Meeting of the Swedish Archaeological Society sets out to explore the fields of tension between the national and the local, the global, and the subregional. The speakers will give us different and interesting perspectives on the multifaceted topic of “borders”, from what they have meant in the past, to what they might mean to us today.
The Swedish Archaeological Society warmly welcomes you to the 9thBiannual Meeting of the Swedish Archaeological Society, Svenska Arkeologmötet 2011.
